Literature is Everywhere:
To me, Literature takes a variety of different shapes and forms. Literature is everywhere. It is in the music we play, the movies we watch, and the books we read. We experience literature in the classrooms as well as in church, or even when your song comes on as you approach the batter's box. What literature really means to me is a lasting credit shown through a variety of readings, films, and music. It brings new meaning. This new meaning is formed through an incorporation of all the senses working together.
Literature plays a huge role in our society today. It is all over the place! The news, advertisement, and even this blog all makeup different forms of literature. It is important because it helps people see and understand things through a new light and to experience things in ways they never thought they would. Novels, poetry, nonfiction, and even music are more examples of literature.
In my opinion, the best form of literature is film. There are many discrepancies as to why film should not be considered literature in the first place, but this is most definitely not the case. Film incorporates theater, music, and even writing altogether into one. Its like a combo pack. One of the best forms of literature in my opinion is Mary Harron's "American Psycho". The music and the acting is truly unparalleled. The story takes you into the mind of a psychotic killer who is trying to fit in with society. Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale, is a self obsessed wall street tycoon who lives a very extravagant life. Oh yeah, he's also into deaths, murders, and he enjoys dissecting women in his free time.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when he is sitting down in his fancy apartment with his friend Paul Allen and is acting completely normal. Music from Huey Lewis and the News is playing in the background and the whole scene sends this comedic chill to the viewer. The acting and the music combine to form this amazing piece of literature.
Another one of my favorite scenes is the one with all of the business cards. It is made up of about ten of Bateman's business partners all showing off their new business cards. They are so self-involved that each and every one of them wants to have the best one. Literature is clearly apparent in the script and the inner monologue that goes on in Patrick Bateman's head.
Literature is everywhere. It makes our society the way it is and forms our way of life. Literature engages the senses to define the world.
